In collaboration with SEND Relief, the SPRC has published a report on refugees in Hamilton.
Close to 31,000 people living in the city of Hamilton in 2021 came to Canada in the 1980s or later as refugees. That represents about 6% of Hamilton’s overall population. This population is culturally and linguistically diverse, with various life circumstances and journeys that brought them to Canada. This report uses Census data and other sources to give insights into the demographic characteristics of this population. The report also provides a general overview of the asylum-seeking process in Canada and a summary of country conditions around the world that currently push their citizens to leave to seek asylum and become refugees in Canada.
